Allowing IIS to Open Various File Formats Using Internet Explorer

If you manage your own web server and want to make sure that your Internet clients are able to open those files within their browser, you may have to do some customization in IIS to make sure the web server knows how to instruct the browser on opening the file.

For example, IIS is already configured with much of the information needed, but in the case of .msg files, Microsoft Outlook will not be invoked automatically to open the file. Without the proper configuration, the web server will most likely redirect you to a Page Not Found.

1. Open IIS and navigate to the web site
2. Choose Properties
3. Choose the tab HTTP Headers
4. Locate MIME type button.
5. Add the extension as .MSG and MIME Type as application/vnd.ms-outlook
6. Apply the changes.
